Reports

【Reflection】
The Research and Development Workshop, organised by the Department for Transport (DfT) and the Department for Business and Trade (DBT), has marked a significant step forward in fostering international collaboration and advancing the future of transport. Bringing together influential stakeholders from the UK and Japan, as well as leaders from academia, industry, and government, these events have successfully established productive partnerships that bridge key sectors and accelerate innovation.

A major achievement of the roundtable series has been the forging of strong relationships to enhance the UK/Japan bilateral relationship. Through open dialogue and focused discussion, participants have shared best practices and insights across R&D innovation, ensuring that both countries remain at the forefront of the global transport revolution. By leveraging their respective strengths, the events have paved the way for joint initiatives and collaborative projects with the potential for significant international impact.
Aligned with departmental priorities, the roundtable events delivered a comprehensive programme that directly supports the green transport mission. Sessions focused on decarbonization, sustainable mobility solutions, and digital transformation within transport, positioning the UK as a leader in shaping the future landscape of mobility. Attendees were able to identify emerging opportunities in areas such as autonomous vehicles, battery technologies, and smart infrastructure, further fueling economic growth and technological advancement.

The success of the R&D roundtable events is evident in the positive engagement and ongoing projects that have emerged. By facilitating knowledge exchange and maximizing business opportunities, the Department for Transport and DBT have not only advanced their strategic priorities but also reinforced their commitment to pioneering innovation and strengthening the UK’s global presence in clean and connected transport.

【Post EXPO Initiatives】
Looking forward, the UK aims to develop a transport system that incorporates sustainability and inclusivity by integrating scientific, technological, and creative approaches. Continued international cooperation and information-sharing will be central to achieving this goal. The innovations and concepts presented during the exhibition are intended to contribute to ongoing dialogue and future collaboration beyond the Expo.

Expanding cooperation with Japan is also under consideration. Through joint research and policy engagement, both countries may work together on mobility initiatives aimed at improving safety, comfort, and user-focused outcomes.

These objectives will be supported by professional networks and partnerships established during the Expo and into subsequent activities.
