Reports

【Reflection】
The seminar held on 26 June 2025 at the Singapore Pavilion was a valuable opportunity to learn about accessibility and inclusive design from diverse perspectives under the theme of “Building Inclusive Spaces.” Speakers from Singapore’s disability support organisation SG Enable, as well as designers, architects, and hospitality experts, shared concrete examples and advanced initiatives aimed at creating a society where everyone, including people with disabilities, can live comfortably.

The event deepened participants’ understanding not only of physical barrier-free environments but also of the importance of digital accessibility, employment promotion for persons with disabilities, and the concept of “meaningful access” in architecture. Notable examples included Singapore’s universally designed “English Village” and companies actively promoting disability employment, which served as valuable models of a society where diverse people live and work together.

Through panel discussions and Q&A sessions, the need for society-wide awareness and cultural change to make accessibility a natural norm was strongly emphasised. The subsequent networking session also provided a precious opportunity for participants to interact directly with experts.

Overall, this seminar offered a very meaningful occasion to deepen understanding of comprehensive initiatives for building a society where people with diverse needs can live together inclusively.

【Post EXPO Initiatives】
Following the seminar, the Singapore Pavilion and related organisations have been further strengthening efforts to promote accessibility, based on the discussions and examples shared during the event. They continue to disseminate information aimed at raising awareness of universal design, making the importance and practical approaches of inclusive spaces widely understood by the general public.
Regarding digital accessibility, collaborations with companies and local governments have been deepened to promote the adoption of accessibility standards for websites and applications. This aims to create environments where everyone, including persons with disabilities, can use digital services without stress.

In terms of employment promotion for persons with disabilities, inspired by successful cases such as Forward Coffee and Escuit, programmes supporting the expansion of employment opportunities across a wide range of industries, including hospitality, are being considered. Facilitating mutual understanding and communication in the workplace remains a key ongoing focus.

In addition, in architecture and urban planning, efforts are being made to promote the concept of “meaningful access,” aiming to create spaces that are environmentally conscious yet accessible to all. These initiatives are shared internationally as model cases, aiming to encourage global collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Going forward, we will continue to actively work with diverse partners to realise a society that is comfortable to live and work in for everyone, including persons with disabilities.
