【Reflection】
On May 23, 2025, Swissnex in Japan and ZHAW (Zurich University of Applied Sciences) co-hosted the event “Future of Air Traffic: Co-Imagining the Next Era of Aviation” at the Swiss Pavilion. Bringing together experts from Swiss and Japanese academia, government, and industry—including JAXA, University of Tokyo, ZHAW, and Japan Airlines—the full-day symposium explored the future of aviation through keynotes, panels, poster sessions, and a cutting-edge flight simulator demo.

Key themes included human-AI collaboration in air traffic management, environmental sustainability, trajectory-based operations, and the evolving role of pilots in increasingly automated systems.
Notable presentations included Prof. Eri Itoh on intelligent airspace management and JAXA’s Naoki Matayoshi on Japan’s roadmap for advanced air mobility.
Prof. Peter Lenhart of ZHAW demonstrated cockpit innovation using a mixed-reality simulator built with Apple Vision Pro, offering attendees a hands-on experience of next-generation flight interfaces.
Panels addressed challenges in integrating low- and high-altitude operations, maintaining safety amid automation, and reshaping training programs. Poster sessions featured contributions from institutions such as Tohoku University, Keio University, and NEC, showcasing collaborative research in aviation technology.

The event capped a two-month Swissnex-led initiative fostering partnerships between ZHAW and Japanese institutions, emphasizing shared visions for sustainable, safe, and human-centered air mobility.

【Post EXPO Initiatives】
Following the “Future of Air Traffic” event at Expo 2025, key initiatives were launched to deepen Swiss–Japanese collaboration in aerospace innovation.

Professor Peter Lenhart of Zurich University of Applied Sciences remained in Japan as a visiting researcher at the University of Tokyo, fostering ties with institutions like JAXA, Keio, Tohoku University, and NAIST. From April to June, Swissnex in Japan facilitated exchanges with partners such as JAL Future Lab, NEC, NABLA Mobility, ENRI, and Spaceport Oita, strengthening cross-sector networks.

These efforts aligned with Japan’s CARATS 2040 strategy to modernize air traffic systems through sustainability, new mobility, safety, and resilience. The Expo symposium served as a springboard for continued technological and policy cooperation.
