Reports

【Reflection】
"The Business Forum held at the Indonesia Pavilion during Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai offered a valuable opportunity to focus on sustainable infrastructure development and economic transformation in the Riau Islands and West Java regions. In line with Indonesia’s long-term vision, Indonesia Emas 2045, the forum showcased strategies aimed at inclusive and environmentally responsible economic growth, supported by concrete project examples.

The Riau Islands, benefiting from their status as a free trade zone, were highlighted for their abundant resources and strategic role as a logistics hub. A key moment was the announcement that Japanese company GreenBank Corporation is investing USD 1 billion in the Wiraraja Green Renewable Energy & Smart Eco Industrial Park on Galang Island, Riau Islands – a major milestone in green industrial development. This investment was formalised through the signing of a Joint Venture Agreement with Wiraraja Strategix, demonstrating strong private sector confidence in Indonesia’s renewable energy potential.

In West Java, detailed presentations on smart city development and the attraction of high-tech industries underlined the region’s potential as a new driver of Indonesia’s economic growth. Notably, initiatives such as industrial zones powered by renewable energy sources like solar and biomass, and the adoption of technologies through partnerships with Japanese companies, were highly praised by participants.

Furthermore, the deepening bilateral cooperation between Japan and Indonesia raised expectations among investors and stakeholders for enhanced partnerships. The forum effectively conveyed the importance of regional economic diversification and sustainable growth models, offering participants practical insights. It served as a significant platform for envisioning the future of bilateral collaboration and regional development."

【Post EXPO Initiatives】
Following the forum, momentum has grown around economic infrastructure development and investment promotion in the Riau Islands and West Java. The Indonesian government is progressing with a private-sector-led financing model while prioritising smart city development and the attraction of sustainable energy industries. Concrete project launches and enhancements to existing infrastructure are steadily advancing.

Collaboration with Japanese companies continues to deepen, as evidenced by the initial exploratory steps to establish a joint venture in the Riau Islands. This synergy is expected to balance environmental considerations with enhanced economic value, significantly boosting regional competitiveness. Moreover, multi-layered partnerships tailored to regional characteristics are being developed, with domestic and international investors, local governments, and academic institutions working together to improve financing efficiency and project implementation.

Looking ahead, efforts will be further accelerated to contribute to Indonesia’s sustainable economic development as a whole, while strengthening economic ties with Japan. It is anticipated that the outcomes generated from this Expo will bear fruit within local communities and business activities, serving as a future-oriented growth model to be widely shared both domestically and internationally.
