EXPO2025 Theme Weeks

Programme details

This programme introduces a sustainable health support model using natural materials derived from sugarcane. Drawing on the outcomes of medical research in Cuba, it aims to promote international knowledge exchange and foster global collaboration.

It also holds particular relevance for Japan, where an ageing population requires diverse approaches to lifestyle disease prevention. By blending nature and science, the programme proposes a new direction in health and wellbeing.

The event welcomes not only experts and professionals but also the general public, encouraging open dialogue across cultures and healthcare sectors. It aspires to create a bidirectional, participatory model of health promotion.

Reports

【Reflection】
At the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo’s “Health and Wellbeing Week,” the Republic of Cuba and related organisations collaborated to deliver a programme centred on the natural ingredient policosanol. Policosanol, extracted from Cuban sugarcane, has been shown in numerous studies to support the maintenance of healthy blood vessels and improve cholesterol balance. In particular, it has been found to reduce harmful LDL cholesterol and increase beneficial HDL cholesterol, raising expectations for its role in preventing cardiovascular disease.

The programme featured lectures and academic panel discussions led by Cuban experts, who presented detailed findings from the latest research and clinical trials. Attendees engaged enthusiastically, asking many questions and sharing their own health experiences, demonstrating strong interest in this innovative health support model that combines natural materials and science. Especially in light of Japan’s ageing society, the programme provided valuable information to a wide range of visitors as an effective option for lifestyle disease prevention.

Furthermore, in conjunction with the diverse exhibits at the Cuba Pavilion—including medicine, science, culture, sport, and tourism—this programme was positioned as a practical example of health promotion for future societies, contributing to increased health awareness among visitors.

【Post EXPO Initiatives】
Following the conclusion of the Expo, we will continue to promote and advance research on the health benefits of policosanol, utilising Cuba’s rich natural resources and scientific achievements. Building on the international collaborations established through this programme, we will work closely with medical and research institutions in Japan and other countries to expand joint clinical trials and research activities, aiming to strengthen the scientific evidence base.

Moreover, in response to Japan’s ageing population, we will focus on disseminating a lifestyle disease prevention model that incorporates natural ingredients derived from Cuban sugarcane. We will regularly hold training sessions and seminars for healthcare professionals to deepen their expertise and understanding, alongside proactive health awareness activities for the general public, thereby contributing to improved public health consciousness.

Furthermore, we will broaden frameworks for industry-academia-government collaboration and international exchange, promoting the development and commercialisation of materials rooted in Cuba’s natural environment. By enhancing initiatives toward the social implementation of sustainable health support models, we will strengthen our contribution to both local and global communities.

Through these multifaceted efforts, we aim to ensure the Expo’s outcomes are effectively shared with society, contributing to the extension of healthy life expectancy.
