Reports

【Reflection】
It was a privilege to collaborate with the Birmingham Royal Ballet for Osaka Expo 2025. The pop-up performance at the Outer East stage was very popular, drawing a large crowd of around 500 people; in fact, people began to queue for this well in advance, some since the morning. On a particularly warm June day, the dancers showed incredible durability to deliver performances of Cindarella, Sleeping Beauty and La Mal Gardée.

The panel at the UK Pavilion was also very well received with an engaging mix of speakers from a varied background (clinical, photography and ballet). Attendees were engaged during the panel, aided by the simultaneous interpretation. The panel session being filmed by the Expo Theme Week teamenabled a global audience to watch the event for years to come. The powerful exhibition depicts dancers before and after a performance, and visibly highlights the physical toll taken on the dancer's bodies. Clive Booth, the photographer that designed the exhibition, has been working with Birmingham Royal Ballet for a number of years as part of a collaboration that is exploring the effects of relative energy deficiency in dance. Clive also utilisted innovative Canon camera technology, such as lenticular technology, that provided maximum fidelity and increased the impact of the exhibition's creative intent.

A particularly poignant piece of feedback from a visitor to the exhibition was "It is not just beautiful photos of the dancers that are on display, but the content explores the real appearance of ballet dancers that is different from what they are on stage, and the progress of medical care that supports their mind and body behind the scenes. I was deeply impressed by UK’s thorough consideration for the physical and mental wellbeing of professional dancers.

【Post EXPO Initiatives】
Following the panel show on 25th June, the exhibition was open to the public for the following week which saw a considerable attendance from Expo visitors every day. The exhibition will become a focal point for the important work done by the Canon and Birmingham Royal Ballet team, with following exhibitions being explored in alternate venues.

Furthermore the chance for UK and Japan-based clinicians, researchers and dance enthusiasts to mingle and collaborate has helped to enhance the relationship between Japan and the UK. Finally with a strong relationship forged between HMG and Birmingham Royal Ballet, there is a strong chance for future collaboration, notably at the 2030 Expo in Saudi Arabia.
