“Our actions save our planet - Plastic and Resource Recycling Society” will be held in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), a leader in global environmental conservation. Focusing on “plastic pollution,” one of the global environmental problems, we will discuss solutions through resource recycling and nature restoration efforts. UNEP environmental message will be delivered to the world through the participation and dialogue by the youth generation who will lead the future, as well as entertainment elements such as a calligraphy performance, musical performance, and a waste art exhibition, expressing the spirit of global environmental conservation.

Programme details
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) International Environmental Technology Centre, established in Osaka as a legacy of the "International Garden and Greenery EXPO" held in Osaka in 1990, and its supporting organization, the Global Environment Centre Foundation (GEC), will hold “Our actions save our planet - Plastic and Resource Recycling Society".
UNEP, the world leader in global environmental conservation, is warning that urgent action is needed to address the current the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. This event will focus on “Plastic Pollution”, as one of the global issues, and will explore the solutions through "Resource Recycling" and "Nature Restoration" together to protect the irreplaceable earth and all life.
UNEP’s environmental message will be disseminated to the world, and the event will focus on the participation and dialogue with youth generation who are responsible for the future society, as well as a variety entertaining activities such as a calligraphy performance, a musical performance using marine trash instruments, and an exhibition of waste artworks, which express the spirit of global environmental conservation. The event will also review the SDGs actions to “leave no one behind” by 2030, aiming for the realization of a sustainable society.

After obtaining a PhD in Environmental Science from the University of Shizuoka, he served as a postdoctoral researcher at Tsinghua University, a research officer at the National Institute for Minamata Disease under the Ministry of the Environment, and an international negotiation and project official at the Waste Management and Recycling Department of the Ministry of the Environment, Government of Japan. In May 2015, he joined to UNEP as a Programme Officer in charge of waste management and has been working for integrated solid waste management within the context sustainable development to support to the UN Member States.

Sheila Aggarwal-Khan
Director, Industry and Economy Division, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
Ms. Sheila Aggarwal-Khan has over 30 years of experience in environmental policy and management. She has held senior positions at UNEP, including Acting Director of the Policy and Programme Division, and played a leading role at IUCN in managing global environmental funds such as the Green Climate Fund and the Global Environment Facility, expanding their scale and impact. She has also contributed to international environmental initiatives through collaborations with U.S. agencies and as an advisor to a UNDP working group on global funds. Dr. Aggarwal-Khan holds a Ph.D. in Development Studies from the University of East Anglia and has authored publications on international environmental governance and the effectiveness of global financing mechanisms.

Dr Mushtaq Ahmed Memon is a Regional Coordinator for Chemicals and Pollution Action Subprogramme with the United Nations Environment Programme, Regional Office for the Asia and the Pacific. He is Pakistani national, and he is working with UNEP since 1 April 2005 in areas of circular economy, sustainable consumption and production, plastic pollution, air pollution, waste, and water. He got his PhD in Japan and a MSc in the UK. He published papers in international journals, participated in major global events, and delivered various training programmes.

Takuo Dome
Advisor to the President Specially Appointed Professor, Social Solution Initiative, Osaka University
Dr. Takuo Dome received his Ph.D. in Economics from the Graduate School of Economics at Kyoto University. He has been a professor at Osaka University since 2001, specializing in the history of economics and economic thought. He received the Nikkei Economic Book Award for Political Economy of Public Finance in Britain 1767-1873 (Routledge, 2004) and the Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities for Adam Smith: The World of 'The Theory of Moral Sentiments' and 'The Wealth of Nations' (Chuokoron Shinsha, 2008). In 2019, he received the Medal with Purple Ribbon.

He leads environment-related projects on a wide range of topics including climate change, biodiversity, and circular business.

Kanon Handa
Leader, Girl Scouts of Japan
Ms. Kanon Handa joined the Girl Scouts at the age of seven and is now active as a leader supporting the activities of younger members.
In 2024, she contributed to the Japanese translation team for the "Plastic Tide Turners Challenge Badge" toolkit, led by the Girl Scouts of Japan – Osaka Federation. She develops programs that help children learn about marine plastic waste and take action.

Ms. Yuuna Okanishi is a calligrapher and artist who pursues the “beauty of curves” in the world of nature through her calligraphy and creative activities. She breathes life into letters and expresses her own sense of rhythm and inspiration. In recent years, she has been creating not only calligraphy but also brush drawings and paintings and has held solo exhibitions both in Japan and abroad. Her first publication, “The Beauty of Line” (Seigensha), was published in 2019.
