【Reflection】
From September 26 to the 29th, we held an exhibit in the Gallery West located in the northwest assembly hall. The event was held during the "The Future of Earth and Biodiversity", which was centered on themes of climate change, de-carbonization, biodiversity, and ocean pollution.

The concept of our exhibit, “Artistic SATOUMI”, was a combination of art, one of Kagawa’s specialties, and SATOUMI (Coastal Villages). We incorporated elements of the Seto Inland Sea’s rich and beautiful nature, challenges of continued coexistence with the Seto Inland Sea, and initiatives focused on solving these challenges such as the creation of SATOUMIs.

We displayed an arch-shaped work of art as the centerpiece of our exhibition formed using processed ocean litter and created in partnership with Tokyo University of the Arts. In addition, we held a display for the “Eco Island” initiative in Naoshima, which is carrying out community development in harmony with the environment. We also held a panel focused on introducing initiatives for the environment and activities involving SATOUMI in Kagawa. Through the display of the Setonaikai National Park’s art wall, we conveyed the beauty of islets and islands and the charm of nature in Kagawa.
Moreover, we held an Eco T-shirt Art display and a booth for the Setouchi Triennale 2025 where we shared information regarding Kagawa’s inland sea and art.

Through “Umi Gomi Leaders”- a committee commissioned by Kagawa Prefecture that promotes efforts in reducing sea litter, we conducted a workshop that involved creating art pieces out of debris collected in the Seto Inland Sea. On stage, artists that make art out of sea debris, faculty from Kagawa University, and staff from “Umi Gomi Leaders” participated in a talk-event. Artist Mimika also gave a mini live performance and “Umigomira” Kigurumi (mascot character) held a greeting event.

Additionally, in order to experience the bountiful blessings of the Seto Inland Sea, we prepared an Olive Yellowtail tasting. A Kagawa Prefecture promotional video was broadcasted alongside a Marugame Uchiwa (Traditional Japanese Bamboo Fan) modeled after a fish to showcase the prefecture’s attractive elements, including the Seto Inland Sea.

Over four days, roughly twenty thousand people visited us. This was an opportunity for many visitors from around the world to learn about our prefecture‘s attractions, such as nature and art, and initiative to continue to protect our beautiful Seto Inland Sea into the future.

【Post EXPO Initiatives】
We conducted a simple survey on our visitors and received 3244 responses.
99% of those who responded answered that they wished to visit Kagawa. Our results indicated that people were interested in the nature of the Seto Inland Sea, Food, and Art in that order. We hope to use these results in shaping our future initiatives.

Additionally, our exhibition proved to not only be an opportunity for artists from Kagawa, faculty of Kagawa University, “Umi Gomi Leaders”, Kagawa Prefecture Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives, and other parties within Kagawa Prefecture to once again collaborate, but also an opportunity to partner with those from outside of the prefecture, such as Tokyo University of the Arts and other artists that utilize ocean litter in their works. We expect that this will be a catalyst for expanding connections into the future.

Additionally, through this exhibition, we received both domestic and international visitors. Those who visited gave feedback such as “I want to go to Kagawa” and “Kagawa is a nice place”. We believe this initiative has served as an opportunity for visitors to fully appreciate Kagawa Prefecture's rich and beautiful natural environment in the Seto Inland Sea, learn about the challenges of coexisting with the sea and initiatives like “Satoumi Creation” aimed at addressing them, and experience the appeal of art. It has encouraged people to visit Kagawa Prefecture and enjoy and purchase our local specialties.
