【Reflection】
On 17 September 2025, the Nordic Pavilion hosted Nordic Space Day. The event was designed to deepen cooperation between the Nordic countries and Japan in the space sector and to explore the future of sustainable space utilization.
Special Lectures by Astronauts
The morning session featured keynote speeches by Marcus Wandt, astronaut with the European Space Agency (ESA) and CIO of Saab, and Satoshi Furukawa, astronaut with JAXA. Drawing on their experiences aboard the International Space Station, both emphasized the scientific and technological advances made possible through international cooperation, as well as the crucial role of space in inspiring and educating future generations.
Policy Dialogue by Governments and Space Agencies
A subsequent policy-focused panel discussion brought together leading representatives, including Ella Carlsson, Director General of the Swedish National Space Agency, alongside officials from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and JAXA. The discussions spanned urgent issues such as space debris removal and sustainable orbital use, as well as defense and security applications of space.
Director General Carlsson, whose agency established a Tokyo office as recently as July, stressed both the long-standing relationship between Japan and the Nordic countries and the importance of further strengthening partnerships in business and research going forward.
Showcase of Cutting-Edge Technology
In the afternoon, Nordic startups introduced pioneering solutions in satellite technology, data services, and cryptographic security. These presentations highlighted how space-driven innovation can open up new possibilities for industry and society alike.
