Programme details
The oceans of the world are now in a critical situation. It is estimated that more than 8 million tons of marine plastic waste are discharged into the ocean every year, and it is said that by 2050, the weight of marine plastic waste will exceed the total weight of the world's fish. On the other hand, the ocean, which brings us various riches, still has a lot of hidden potential.
The Nikkei Shimbun and Nikkei BP have launched the "NIKKEI Blue Ocean Forum" with the aim of protecting the ocean and properly utilizing marine resources.
One of the pillars of the forum, the "Expert Committee," has held meetings of 11 experts from various fields related to the ocean and representatives from companies over the two years from 2011 to 2012, and has deepened discussions especially on three themes: "biodiversity conservation," "resource circulation," and "climate change countermeasures."
This time, as a culmination of the discussions over the past two years, "Japan's Proposal for Marine Conservation (tentative)" will be compiled and announced at the Osaka-Kansai Expo. In addition, each session will carefully introduce the discussion process, the thoughts behind the proposal, and the latest examples of marine conservation in Japan that should be shared with the world.
