Peace, Human Security and Dignity Week
Business Idea Contest aiming to solve issues of forced displaced persons
Japan International Cooperation Agency
The number of refugees and forced displaced persons worldwide has reached 120 million, the largest number to date, with a majority forced to live in neighboring developing countries in situations of uncertainty and poverty. While the burden of host countries continues to rise, humanitarian assistance alone is no longer enough. At this juncture, it is time to tackle the challenges faced by forcibly displaced persons and host communities through exploring innovative and sustainable solutions which harness the potential of the private sector and business world. In this event, we are seeking innovative ideas to address various issues concerning refugees and forced displaced persons through a business idea contest, which will then be shared with the world.

Programme details
At this event, after introducing to the audience the current challenges faced by refugees around the world, and the kind of support required to meet their various needs, a business contest will be held seeking innovative proposals which can contribute to making a difference in the lives of refugees and forcibly displaced persons. This event tailors for a wide audience – those who are interested in solving refugee issues as well as those who are not yet familiar with refugee issues. Through this unique opportunity to witness venture companies and other organizations boldly taking on the challenge of solving those issues, the audience will be encouraged to think about solutions to the challenges on their own. Venture companies and students selected in the pre-screening process will participate in the main contest, and JICA, UNHCR, NGOs, private companies, etc. will judge the winning proposal, considering a diverse range of perspectives. Ultimately, the selected ideas will be provided with financial and technical support by JICA to realize their proposed business in refugee host countries or refugee countries .
The event is one part of a holistic and comprehensive project designed to enhance private sector support towards addressing refugee issues, comprising pre-screening of ideas, the main business contest, and eventual commercialization support, throughout which all stakeholders, including participants, will play a role towards realizing innovative refugee support.
