The 7th RD20 International Conference was held in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture, during Tokyo GX Week. A total of hundreds of participants with in-person and online attended, including approximately 50 international attendees from 18 countries and regions.
The first two days of the Technical Session (TS) gathered experts from G20 countries and regions to discuss cutting-edge clean energy technologies starting with High level talk on energy and environment.
TS #1: Synthetic fuels including a wide range of resources, conversion processes and products
🔑Keywords: synthetic fuels, hydrogen, ammonia, e-fuel, SAF, biomass, biofuels, solar fuels, next generation fuels, sustainable fuels
TS #2: Energy storage with a focus on grid-scale storage for renewables
🔑 Keywords: grid-scale storage, hydrogen storage, redox flow technology, BTM (Behind-The-Meter), energy storage optimization with weather data
TS #3: AI and digitalization to accelerate research for energy technology innovation, development and deployment
🔑Keywords: autonomous laboratory, digital twins, smart grid technology, digital transformation, AI driven behavior change, AI-powered research matching
On the final day, the Leaders Session gathered leaders from RD20 member institutions to discuss the measures to accelerate international collaboration through RD20 and its activities.
Learning from the best practices in RD20 member countries and regions, and RD20 taskforce activities, we renewed our recognition of the critical role of collaboration to realize carbon neutral society.
Also, Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie (HZB) was officially approved as a new member of RD20. New avenues for international collaboration has opened up.
🔬Highlights:
✅”Advancing Carbon Dioxide Removal: International Collaboration and MRV Innovations at AIST-GZR” by Dr. Akira Yoshino (AIST)
✅”Green Energy Research at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin- Innovations Through International Partnerships” by Prof. Dr. Bernd Rech (HZB, Germany)
✅Taskforce research activity: PV Performance Characterization, H2 Life Cycle and Sustainability Analysis (LCSA), H2TEA (Techno-Economic Assessment)
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
The 8th RD20 Conference will be hosted by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and held in Pretoria, South Africa, from October 19 to 23, 2026. Furthermore, as part of its annual activities, the RD20 initiative will advance task force activities with the participation and cooperation of member institutions.
