Sustainable Energy for Society【Part1】
Issues facing the realization of a carbon-neutral society
NIKKEI
The oil industry has a social responsibility to balance "stable energy supply" and "achieving carbon neutrality," which support the lives of the people and economic growth. How do we realize a sustainable society? We will work together with students of the future generation to consider what society as a whole can tackle from the perspectives of mobility and energy.

【Reflection】
In this program, we discussed the challenges and solutions for achieving a carbon-neutral society. On behalf of the organizers, Chairman Kido of the Petroleum Association of Japan opened the event by explaining the status of petroleum in Japan and the industry's efforts and challenges toward carbon neutrality. The following discussion followed, with Harry Sugiyama, Hikaru Todoroki, Kenichi Morishita, and Toru Takahashi taking to the stage. They discussed the appeal of gradually increasing the blending rate while utilizing existing infrastructure as a reason for carbon-neutralizing liquid fuels. Meanwhile, challenges to carbon-neutral fuel adoption, such as its cost and stable raw material procurement, were raised. Discussions focused on further technological development to reduce prices, the importance of industry-academia-government collaboration, and the need to foster consumer understanding. In the second half of the event, Kenta Yoshida of Kyoto University and Mei Nagano of Doshisha University, representing students, posed questions about the necessity of carbon-neutral fuels and what is needed for their future widespread adoption. The speakers responded, along with warm messages to students.
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
Going forward, we will continue to disseminate information about the oil industry's efforts toward stable energy supplies and carbon neutrality so that it can be shared with the entire society, including consumers.
